Notes #1 9/12/2013

Hard Drive Definitions:

Seek TimeWith rotating drives, the seek time measures the time it takes the head assembly on the actuator arm to travel to the track of the disk where the data will be read or written.

LatencyRotational latency (sometimes called rotational delay or just latency) is the delay waiting for the rotation of the disk to bring the required disk sector under the read-write head.

Data Transfer TimeThe data transfer rate of a drive (also called throughput) covers both the internal rate (moving data between the disk surface and the controller on the drive) and the external rate (moving data between the controller on the drive and the host system).

Data Rate - The data transfer speed between a peripheral device and a computer/

Access = Seek + Latency + Overhead

Categories of storage devices and back up media:

-FDD (Floppy Disk Drive)
-HDD (Hard Disk Drive)
-Optical (CD Roms, and other optical disks)
-Removable ( Optical disks, FDD, Punch cards, flash drives, SD cards, SSDs, Cameras, Smart Phones, Punch Cards)

Data is stored in a flux, which is an area that contains a tiny magnetic field.

Stepper Motor - stepper motor is a brushless DC electric motor that divides a full rotation into a number of equal steps. The motor's position can then be commanded to move and hold at one of these steps without any feedback sensor, as long as the motor is carefully sized to the application.

Voice Coil - voice coil (consisting of a formercollar, and winding) is the coil of wire attached to the apex of a loudspeaker cone. It provides the motive force to the cone by the reaction of a magnetic field to the current passing through it.

  1. please don't just give me your notes. Pick somethings from the days topic and research some more information about it. Eg tell me about stepper motors and voice coils. The idea is to add information that I did not share with you in class.
